INTEGRATED PHYSICS AND CHEMISTRY

In this course, we will explore the nature of the world, using math and science to explain concepts of motion, force, gravity, energy, and the chemical structure of the world around us. In the first semester, we will look into the concepts of motion, gravity, electricity and magnetism. In the second semester, we will introduce the way chemicals make up and affect the world around us.

This course will be completed entirely on Edgenuity, an online course software. Edgenuity contains all of the notes, materials, practice, and tests students will use for the course. We will align the Edgenuity coursework with the in person classes as much as possible, so that students who transfer from or to in person learning will continue where they left off in the other class. In the links to each unit, I will provide supplemental resources for students, but none of this material posted is required for this course.

UNIT 1 - NATURE OF SCIENCE

In this unit, we will introduce the basic tenets of science, including the scientific method, laws and theories, and the application of data analysis and graphing. We also define and engage in taking measurements and incorporate the metric system into our scientific process.

UNIT 2 - MOTION AND FORCE

In this unit, we describe and graph motion in terms of distance, displacement, velocity, and acceleration, explore Newton's Laws, and identify types of forces.

UNIT 3 - ENERGY

In this unit, we discuss the nature of energy and explore the way energy is conserved within a system. We also describe thermal energy and explore work and power.

UNIT 4 - ELECTRICITY/MAGNETISM

In this unit, we will describe and define the concept of electric charge and explain how the conduction of charge result in electric current. We will also explore types of circuits and how they are used in everyday life, and investigate the uses and properties of magnets.

UNIT 5 - WAVES

In this unit, we will introduce the nature and properties of waves, as well as their behavior. We will discuss light as a particle and a wave and explore the electromagnetic spectrum and it's uses.

UNIT 6 - MATTER

In this unit, we introduce the chemical concept of matter, exploring physical and chemical properties of matter, as well as classifying matter by composition. We will review states of matter and explore properties of solutions and their uses.

UNIT 7 - ATOMIC STRUCTURE

In this unit, we will explore the structure of the atom and identify atomic particles such as protons, neutrons, and electrons. We will describe and explore the uses of isotopes, and investigate the structure and families of the periodic table.

UNIT 8 - BONDING

In this unit, we will explore the formation and naming conventions of ionic and covalent chemical bonds. We will also investigate molecular stability and intermolecular forces.

UNIT 9 - CHEMICAL REACTIONS

In this unit, we will explore the interactions between compounds that result in chemical reactions. We will use the law of conservation of mass to balance chemical equations and classify types of reactions based on the chemicals reacted and produced. We will investigate acids and base reactions and describe types of nuclear reactions, as well as identify reactions based on transfer of energy within the system.
